I’m a PhD Candidate in Ethnomusicology at the University of Toronto, deepening the research I’ve been doing for years on Cape Breton Gaelic singing.
Documentary
I’m always trying to complete my film documentary about Gaelic singing in Cape Breton.
Radio
My passion is the audio portrait. I’ve spoken with genre-busting composers like Mark Mothersbaugh, Jon Brion, Mychael Danna, and Michael Torke. For CBC’s OutFront, I’ve interviewed immigrant Taxi drivers. And I’ve had a tete-a-tete with singer-songwriters Nellie McKay, and Aimee Mann.
With CBC Radio in Toronto, I’ve produced interviews and programmed music for The Arts Tonight, and I’ve been part of launching and producing the CBC studio concert series OnStage, as well as stints on virtually every Radio Music show.
Performance
I’m a singer of traditional and classical music, and I have an MA in Musicology. I sing with La Chapelle de Quebec, and past solo work includes the ensemble Puirt a Baroque, and concert with La Nef.
Musing
I love music that’s true and which hits the mark, no matter what the style; I love good radio, red red wines; and a few particular filmmakers. I have a lot of dreams but it’s so damn hard to focus. I like to recite a quote from filmmaker Wes Anderson: There just isn’t any time for self-doubt
